WHO to help health systems

This means that when a disease outbreak occurs the framework is in place to rapidly diagnose, control and eradicate it.
This is important as Pacific island countries and areas are often extremely vulnerable to outbreaks of certain infectious diseases which can not only be fatal but also place sudden and intense demands on health systems disrupting economic activity and development.
In Fiji, the WHO has assisted with the investigation and control of infections in the neonatal intensive care unit of several hospitals. These outbreaks are often difficult to bring under control, because newly born babies have very little resistance to infection.
