Fiji Teachers Union general secretary Agni Deo Singh said it would resolve some long overdue problems in the education system.

"This is something the ministry and the unions have been discussing for years and it is good to see that is getting somewhere," he said. "We are in favour of this Bill because it will set a standard for teachers and in this way it will not be possible for just anyone to become a teacher.

"The Bill will eradicate the problem of having unqualified and unskilled teacher in the education system."

Mr Singh said he was aware of cases where some schools have hired unqualified and unskilled teachers and it was unfortunate the Education Ministry could not do anything about it.

He said this was done in accordance with the school managements and not with the ministry.

Fulton College Principal Anthony Hay said formulating the TRB was a good effort as it would set a teaching standard in the country.

Mr Hay said teachers recruited from overseas should also go through the registration board system.
