Officials at the hospital said the 16 nurses rostered to work the night shift from 10pm remained at their wards continuing with normal duties.

Two nurses who preferred not to be named said they had families to feed and could not afford to go on strike.

"We also swore an oath to God that we will remain faithful to our jobs and so going on strike is not a way of remaining faithful," one of the nurses said.

The second nurse said her family was more important to her.

"It's important that I feed my family and satisfy my children's needs then going on strike and not getting paid at all.

"Only my family will suffer."

The out patient department remained empty after midnight as all patients were examined.

North Health director Doctor Ami Chand said last night's shift was not affected by the strike.

"We have managed with the team we currently have but from tomorrow (today), we will review the plan.

Dr Chand said only the emergency department will be open during this time of the strike and the maternity ward.
