Police spokesperson Corporal Suliano Tevita said the young mother, believed to be in her early 20s, was in labour early Saturday morning when she arrived at the hospital.

"We are pleading to the mother of the baby to come and get her child," he said. "She is young and fragile and needs a mother.

"Not knowing her whereabouts is making it difficult for us to locate her but the police as well as the hospital staff are searching for the mother," said Cpl Tevita.

Acting Sub Divisional Medical Officer of the Rewa subdivision, Doctor Jack Koraai said Ruth was still in hospital and was being nursed by the nurses working on different shifts.

Dr Koraai said Ruth, who was given the name by one of the nurses, was healthy and the nurses were still cup feeding her. "This is the first time such an incident happened at this hospital and we would like to request the mother to come and get her baby," said Dr Koraai. "The hospital will continue to look after and feed the baby but we are hoping for the mother to be traced soon."
