Assistant police spokesperson Atunaisa Sokomuri said the suspect came out of the bushes and grabbed the victim and threatened to kill him.
Mr Sokomuri said the family handed over their valuables worth close to $2000 to the suspect who later fled.
He said the family went straight to the Navua Police Station and lodged a complaint.
