His permanent secretary Parmesh Chand said Commodore Bainimarama was not scheduled for the mayoral salute when members of the defence force marched through the capital city on Saturday.

Mr Chand said Commodore Bainimarama was delighted when told on Friday afternoon that he would visit the Colonial War Memorial Hospital's Children's Ward as part of the Fiji Day celebrations.

"He has no hand in the program set out for him for the Fiji Day celebrations. Any insinuation that this may have been a public relations stunt is a sad reflection. What was witnessed at the hospital was genuine," Mr Chand said.

"Time permitting, he wants to be more in touch with what is on the ground. He would like to visit more institutions, not only health but other sectors and areas, just as he has in the past.

"His itinerary is planned independent of his knowledge. He goes according to his availability."

Commodore Bainimarama visited 50-odd patients at the Children's Ward pledging to return on a weekly basis if he could make it.

According to the PM's office, Commodore Bainimarama is a family man who spends most of his free time with his six grandchildren.
