Colonial assistant general manager marketing Nirdesh Singh said work was done yesterday to strengthen the roof.

He said the engineers hired by Colonial worked on the roof and guttering while minor renovations were done.

He said the cost of damage could only be assessed once roof and guttering was strengthened.

National Fire Authority chief fire officer Mark Reid said they had completed their investigation to ascertain the cause of the fire and the building had been handed back to Colonial on Thursday.

He said he was not aware of what was being done to the building yesterday morning but knew that Colonial was fixing the roof to keep the rain out.

Mr Reid said details about the cause of the fire was sent on Thursday.

The statement from Mr Reid said the investigating team was made up of NFA fire investigators, police forensic squad, insurance investigators, loss assessors and structural engineers

It said investigators had come to the conclusion that the fire started in the top floor ceiling space and involved the power supply to an air conditioning unit.

It said a detailed examination was done by electricians.

"I am pleased that we have been able to quickly determine the cause of the fire as there has been a great deal of interest and speculation," said Mr Reid.
