Interim Education Minister Filipe Bole told stakeholders at an education forum yesterday that improving under-performing schools was a priority for the ministry.
He said the ministry had relooked at the vision and strategy of the State-owned schools. "The output produced has not matched the resources allocated. Over the past years, results have not been encouraging. To address this problem, we have some exciting plans in place," said Mr Bole.
He said consultations would be held with school boards this year and with the support of all stakeholders, the 14 State-operated schools would be restored to their former glory. "Other initiatives include the Higher Education Commission and the Teacher Registration Board. The secretariat of the Higher Education Commission is now in operation. The Higher Education Board has been appointed and has already held a series of meetings.
"Part of the ministry's restructure also includes the setting up of the Fiji National Qualifications Authority."
He said the role of the authority was to ensure that qualifications provided in Fiji are relevant and focused.
"The secretariat of the Teacher registration Board has also been setup. Apart from the business of registering teachers, the board will also monitor the courses offered by teacher training institutions," he said.
