AN immigration officer assigned at the Ninoy Aquino International Airport was suspended yesterday for six months without pay due to unexplained wealth.

Immigration Commissioner Alipio Fernandez is set to implement the preventive suspension order issued by Ombudsman Merceditas Gutierrez against Rodrigo Pedrealba, Immigration officer II detailed at the NAIA Terminal 1, who was found guilty of grave misconduct and dishonesty.

The Ombudsman charged Pedrealba with Anti-Graft and Corrupt Practices Act, violation of the Forfeiture of Unlawfully Acquired Property, Code of Conduct and Ethical Standards for Public Officials and Falsification by Public Officers.

Pedrealba declared in his Statement of Assets and Liabilities and Networth from 1996 to 2004 that he owns only one car and three real estate properties in Novaliches, Quezon City and Bulacan.

However, investigation conducted by the National Bureau of Investigation showed that the BI officer owned six luxury vehicles and several properties.

A check with the Land Transportation Office showed that he owns a Honda Civic, a Ford Lynx, a Ford utility vehicle and a Yin motorcycle.

The NBI also found out that Pedrealba registered under the name of his father, Marcial Pedrealba, a Honda CRV worth P1.1 million, a two-storey house in an exclusive subdivision in Meycauayan, Bulacan and three other lots also in Bulacan.

But his father has no financial resources to acquire the properties as he retired from government service more than 10 years ago, the Ombudsman said.

Gutierrez also confirmed that Pedrealba made at least 12 foreign trips since 1996 despite his monthly salary of P13,393.
