In one of the most awaited films of this year, The Da Vinci Code , British actor Paul Bettany plays the Opus Dei monk Silas.
Bettany’s character in the movie is that of a monk who has been assigned a task in which he has to kill certain people who hold a secret to the Holy Grail. Bettany plays Silas, an albino monk under Opus Dei, a deeply devout Catholic sect.
Reports on contactmusic.com quote Bettany as saying that he loved playing Silas in the movie.
“There is something nice about being able to leave your sense of morality at the door when you come to work in the morning and just be cruel to people all day. It is quite fun,” Bettany is quoted as saying.
However, it may be mentioned that Silas’s character in Dan Brown’s book does have some likeable shades, despite the murderous acts he commits.
Meanwhile, the Opus Dei has asked the makers of the movie to be discreet in depicting “references that hurt Catholics”. Dan Brown’s novel has already come under strong criticism from the Church and various Christian groups, Opus Dei included.
The movie, directed by Ron Howard, stars Tom Hanks, Audrey Tautou, Ian McKellen and Alfred Molena.
The film will premiere at the Cannes film festival on May 17. It will release worldwide on May 19.
